HOME FURNISHINGS’ FAUNA
It’s a jungle out there. Last month’s Parisian trade show Maison & Objet played host to a menagerie of animal-inspired decor, as, decked out in everything from feathers to hides, animalian accessories modeled the untameable chic quickly gaining favor in many trend-savvy circles. This season’s updated safari style dons an ultra-contemporary skin, populating home decor’s wide open spaces with sleek, understated accents and original, deconstructed silhouettes.

Eschewing natural forms in favor of more sleek shapes, modern motifs incorporate actual animal “artifacts” into functional home accessories. Antlers, no longer affixed to the head of a deer, serve much more stylishly as coat hooks or candle holders, and three curved shed horns make sturdy legs for this side table from Arte Italica. Taken out of their original context, these accents provide a touch of the wild without pandering to masculine Lodge looks, gaudy prints or ornate statues.

Contemporary animal influences avoid predictability, but what’s more, they refuse to take themselves too seriously. Realistic representations give way to simple, cartoon-like renderings, as with this deer graphic on a pillow from Lust-Project. Sara Kahlin takes an even more deconstructed approach to her Swedish pine stools, hand-covering them in sheepskin and then embellishing them with two tiny ears that ever so faintly suggest a lamb’s face on the seat’s corner. These whimsical designs gently poke fun at traditional animal motifs while fashioning a style that is all their own.
As wilderness-inspired modernity gains momentum, staple animal prints and motifs from years past will no longer satisfy, so expect more innovative applications of horns, fur and animal forms. Any style of decor can benefit from this dash of feral flair, so whether your store takes a classic or contemporary bent, take notice—and get ready for a walk on the wild side.
